Hurricane Stan- 13Oct. 2005

How You Can Help, Hurricane Stan-Guatemala.

As with any natural disaster of this magnitude there is a sense of being overwhelmed by those of us who are in the midst. The immediate needs are great, some which are being met and some are not. We are encouraged; however, that our God is in control and He uses His people as instruments to accomplish His purpose. As individuals we can't do everything. But, we can do something! Below are a few of the initiatives Maya-Mesoamerica Mission, (MMM), will undertake as our Lord provides.

Short-term relief ministry teams: You can organize and (or) participate in a short term team. If you have an interest in a team please contact us.

  • Size of team: The optimum team size is three or four people, but the size can be flexible.
  • How long will you stay: Plan to be in Guatemala from seven to ten days.
  • What will we do: There are three areas of emphasis that MMM is focusing on. 1.) Rebuilding homes and repairing the land so it can be put back in to agricultural use. 2.) Medical/Dental village outreaches. 3.) Participate in economic development initiatives which will allow villagers to become self-supporting.
  • How much will it cost: All ministry teams pay their own expenses and provide the funds for whatever outreach project they work on. Round trip airfares from North America range $300-$700. Food, lodging, and travel expenses while in Guatemala are about $25.00 per day. For more specifics on cost email us at info@mayamission.org .
When should we come: ASAP, but due to the tremendous destruction there will be significant ministry opportunities throughout 2005 and 2006.
  • What documents or vaccinations do I need: You will need a valid passport to enter Guatemala. Visas are issued by the Guatemalan government at the airport when you enter the country. No vaccinations are required. We recommend that you have a current tetanus vaccination.

Food and clothing drive: You can organize and coordinate a food and clothing drive for your church, school, service club, business, or other organization. One third of the agricultural output for the nation of Guatemala was destroyed by Hurricane Stan. Already there are food shortages in the hurricane affected areas. The price of staple foods is projected to rise 200 to 800 percent in the next ninety days. If you can coordinate a food/clothing drive email us and we can give more details.

Needed:

  • Non-perishable food; rice, sugar, dried beans, pasta, can vegetables, can fruit, can meat.
  • Laundry detergent, dish soap, personal hygiene items.

Financial Donations!!! Money is need now to provide immediate relief and assistance. You can donate online with a credit card or send your check to:
