May 2005

We are pleased to announce that Jerry Cotney senses the leading of our Lord to work with MMM as a full-time missionary.  Jerry has been living in Xela since last summer and attends Xela Community Church.  At XCC Jerry is presently working with the youth and playing the drum with the praise team.  He plans to return to his home in Alabama this August to raise financial support, spend some time with his family, and develop his role in the mission.  If you would like to join us and welcome Jerry as a partner on mission with Maya-Mesoamerica Mission, you can contact him at jerrycotney@hotmail.com.

Maya-Mesoamerica Institute:  The last week of April we finished the first class conducted by Maya-Mesoamerica Institute  for Biblical Studies.  It was a video course conducted by Rick Warren over the first two chapters of James.  We held the classes at Xela Community Church and there were eleven people who attended the six session course which was all in English.  Five were Guatemalans and six people were from North America.  The first week of May we began our second class, The Purpose Driven Life, which is in Spanish.  Guillermo is teaching and leading the discussion.

Xela Community Church Meghan said it was one of the best weddings she has ever been to.  Sandra and Martin were married the second Saturday in April at the church and the building was packed with family and friends.  Guillermo and David officiated the first wedding of XCC members, and most of the congregation helped in some way.  There were flowers, food, and friends to share the blessing.

Xolcaja:  Guillermo, Rosario, Kathy, and David represented MMM at the dedication of the land for the School/Christian Life Center at Xolcaja.  We are humbled, yet excited that our Lord is giving us the opportunity to provide this land.  Presently there is no missionary, national or foreign, to serve in Xolcaja and share with the people there the goods things of Jesus.  Please pray with us that God’s people will have “ears to hear” when our Lord says “you are needed to do my work in Xolcaja”.

Then He said to His disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest that He will send out laborers into His harvest.

(Matthew 9:37-38 MKJV)

Las Nubes:  Jerry, Meghan, Guillermo, and David drove for about an hour up into the mountains to find a village where we heard they were raising rabbits for food.  Our Lord led us to a man who could tell us everything we wanted to know about rabbits.  Praise the Lord!

Stephanie Banas is shown with Yolanda, a fourteen year old Mayan girl from Las Nubes.  Stephanie’s family sponsors Yolanda with a $30.00 monthly gift.  This gift enables Yolanda to stay in school and complete her education.  Yolanda’s mother is a widow and works in the fields for $8.00 a day to support herself and her four children.  There are other Christian children in situations similar to Yolanda’s.  If you would like to sponsor a child attending an MMM outreach donate online at www.mayamission.org or send your check to MMM.

Guillermo, Jerry, Kathy, Meghan, and Stephanie are checking out the progress of the “galera” at Las Nubes Christian Church.  The hope is to have a tin roof and wood walls in place by the end of May.  This will provide a dry place to worship during the rainy season, until a more permanent structure can be financed and built.  Perhaps you or your church would like to “adopt” a church in Central America and help them build an adequate place to worship.  Bring a work team to Guatemala and change your life as well as theirs!
