August 26, 2005

Greetings to all,
Kathy, Meghan, and I Recently returned to Guatemala from a visit to the United States. While in the U.S. we had the opportunity to share with many of you the marvelous things that our Lord is doing in Central America. I was also invited to preach at Heartland Church where I spoke about four giants facing Christ's church in the world as we move in to the 21st century. Last spring I read an article by Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life, where he discussed these giants and he challenged the western church to confront these giants head-on.

The first giant we face is Spiritual Darkness. There are billions of people in the world today who know nothing about Jesus Christ. It is our highest priority at Maya-Mesoamerica Mission to share the salvation message of Jesus with the people in the mountains, jungle, and cities around us. Since the founding of this ministry dozens of people have responded to this message of salvation and found new life in Christ.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority is given to Me in Heaven and in earth. Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you. And, behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:18-20 MKJV)

The second giant confronting the church in the developing world is Disease and Malnutrition. In just the past twelve months we have been your partners in providing dental and medical care, distributing blankets and other supplies to hundreds of people all in the name of Jesus Christ.

The third giant that looms like an oppressive cloud enveloping the countryside is Ignorance.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
(Hosea 4:6 ESV)

  • Over 50% of the population of the world is illiterate.

  • The majority of illiteracy is in women and girls.

  • People can't read God's Word if they can't read!

With your support MMM is currently providing education scholarships to four teens, who without these scholarships would be unable to attend school. We are also making available English classes to several adults and teens.

Our emphasis in the immediate future in combating ignorance is to build and develop a School/Christian Life Center in the jungle village of Xolcaja. We praise our Lord that land has been purchased and walls to a building are going up!

Poverty is a fourth giant we face daily here at the mission in Guatemala. Although there is a small middle-class developing in the cities, millions of people here live in homes with no running water, no electricity, and dirt floors their the children to play on. MMM is working with Xela Community Church and Las Nubes Christian Church in partnership on economic development projects. Presently these projects target widows and abandoned women. Xela Community Church and Las Nubes Christian Church are both churches planted by missionaries from Maya-Mesoamerica Mission.

Regarding the relief offering for poor Christians that is being collected, you get the same instructions I gave the churches in Galatia. Every Sunday each of you make an offering and put it in safekeeping. Be as generous as you can. When I get there you'll have it ready, and I won't have to make a special appeal.
(1 Corinthians 16:1-2 MSG)

Maya-Mesoamerica Mission is on the threshold of planting its third church. We have been asked by a small group of Christians to come and start a Christian church in the village of Las Palmeras. Las Palmeras is very remote. It is a government relocation settlement project deep in the jungle and there is no other Christian church in the area. Guillermo Barrios, MMM's Guatemalan team leader is ready to go, but he needs the help of Christians in the U.S. and Europe. There will be transportation costs, meals, and an overnight stay each week as he goes to Las Palmeras. Perhaps you, your small group, or your church, would like to adopt Las Palmeras as your mission and help plant a new church in Gods Kingdom. I invite you to pray for the Las Palmeras outreach and to make it a part of your "relief offering" on a regular basis. To give financially for this mission outreach make your check out to:

Enclose a note, "For the Las Palmeras outreach".

The mission is taking on these four giants lurking throughout the countryside of Guatemala. Xela Community Church, Las Nubes Christian Church, and soon, Las Palmeras Christian Church, spearhead this attack as MMM facilitates. Thank you for your partnership in bringing Christ to the nations.

In His Grip,
David Doss
